Generally the first 20 to 30 minutes of the appointment consists of the doctor sitting with the parents, guardians or caregiver to get detailed information on the concerns, background history, medical history, etc. If the child is old enough, he/she will wait in the waiting room during this portion of the exam. It is advised to bring a hand held game or something to keep them occupied during this time. After that, the child will meet with the doctor. This part of evaluation involves interview, behavior observation and developmental testing. The last part of the evaluation is standard neurological examination. You will be in the room with your child during this exam.

The last part of the visit is a meeting with the parents to discuss the results of testing, diagnosis and recommendations. A written report will follow within two to three weeks.

It is generally not recommended to be in the same room as your child during testing except when the child is young or has significant difficulty in separation or transitioning. This will be determined at the time of the visit.

Yes. It’s important for the doctor to see if the medication is effective.  The goal is to assess the child's difficulties while on medication or if the child would be a candidate for medication.

The doctor usually prefers to send the child to his primary care pediatrician. In case the pediatrician is not comfortable to write the first script, the child will be started on medication and followed until he is stable. The parent will then follow up with their pediatrician for subsequent refills.

If your child is referred by the local school district Child Study Team, the report will be sent to the team. Your case manager will schedule a formal meeting with you to discuss all the results. Otherwise the report will be sent directly to the parents.
